Weather & Climate

Northern Tasmania has a cool temperate climate, segmented into four distinct seasons. Nestling in the Tamar Valley, and surrounded by large hills and mountains, our weather patterns are known to vary considerably within a short period.

Summer is January to March, with the warmest months January and February having an average air temperature range of 12.2 °C (54 °F) to 24.4 °C (76 °F). The sun here is surprisingly intense – be sure to pack sunscreen.

Winters (June to August) is our cool season, with temperatures dropping below 2 °C (36 °F) an average of 61 days / year. July is our coldest month – the average temperature range is 2.2 °C (36 °F) to 12.5 °C (55 °F). Northern Tasmanian winters are renowned for foggy mornings due to the regions topography and there being less wind during that season. Throughout winter the three prominent peaks of Mt Arthur, Mt Barrow and Ben Lomond are often capped with snow, but it rarely falls in the city and townships. The average annual rainfall is 665 mm (26 in).

Come prepared, bring a coat, or as we call it a 'Tassie tuxedo' and you will be sure to enjoy all that our seasons have to offer.
