Take-away options saved foodies a-plenty during isolation and the standard of home dining rose to a level we never knew existed. Those of us who enjoy catching up with friends over great food and wine rejoiced as restrictions were lifted and it brings even more pleasure after being starved of the experience for weeks on end.
It is now time to jump in the car with your favourite companions, take a road trip in Northern Tasmania and dine on the change of scenery all before first course. Launceston is quickly cultivating its reputation as a bar and restaurant hot spot but take a short drive from our isle’s 2nd biggest city and there are some gastronomic gems awaiting…

Tamar Valley Wine Centre, Exeter
Since opening, Launcestonian’s have discovered the road tripping potential of the Wine Centre. A place to enjoy a tipple or two from a huge range of our famous cool-climate Tamar Valley wines and a quality pizza, it is as good outside in the courtyard as it is amongst the cosy interior.
Miner’s Gold Brewery, Taproom and Restaurant, Beaconsfield
(Re-opening 18th of July)
Located next to the famous mine in a gorgous refurbished building, the brewery pays homage to its surroundings. Try your hand at crowd pleasing pub favourites and wash it down with a ‘Fog on the Tamar’ brew or the ‘West Street Ale’.
The Cabin, Exeter and Legana
For the best coffee in the Valley head to The Cabin. Now open in two locations – Exeter and Legana. From delectable eggs benny and maple granola to the best French Toast when you can’t get to Paris anytime soon, Exeter will have you loaded and ready for your next adventure. In Legana, a caffeine hit, treats and toasties are where it is at.
Pilot Station Café, Low Head
If Meander Valley Roast Pork with crackling doesn’t have you sitting up and taking notice of this quaint café, the classic favourites will certainly float your boat. Located within the historic Low Head Pilot Station precinct be spoilt with water views both inside and out.
George Town Seafoods, George Town
They say when it comes to fish & chips that you should always ask a local and when it comes to being worth a drive, George Town Seafoods always come highly recommended. Off the beaten track the fish shop cooks fresh favourites on site. Our tip…pack a picnic blanket, grab n go and find a possie underneath the Low Head lighthouse 10 minutes further down the road.
The Bunker, Bridport
For more seaside action, the Bridport Bunker Club is a bowls club turned delectable dining option on the Main Street of the coastal village. Local Bridport scallops, Tasmanian oysters and Scottsdale Pork feature but keep an eye on their Facebook page for theme nights and specials.
Wandering Trout Taphouse, Mole Creek
Memories are made in Mole Creek and this new kid on the craft brewing block is offering fine food and beverages made off-grid and by hand. To top off the tasty menu Sunday’s are BYO instrument and open mic!
Green Door Café, Restaurant & Apothecary, Westbury
Pint sized but oh so full of surprises this café and restaurant has a sweet reputation. A cosy atmosphere complete with roaring fire, every dish is made with love and care and boy can you tell.
Rustic Bakehouse, Cressy
Baked in the original 1926 oven, it is the smell of freshly baked sourdoughs that will get to you first. Using traditional methods, the woodfire bakehouse offers artisan breads, pastries, slices and tarts along with a tantalising breakfast menu and pizzas on Friday evenings.
