How to get around

Northern Tasmania can be explored in so many ways whether you choose to go your own way and self-drive, sit back and let someone else do the driving or perhaps under your own steam with some good old-fashioned pedal power, you are sure to find your way with our helpful tips.

For more hints and information on getting around, have a chat with the team at a local Visitor Information Centre.

Take to the roads

Northern Tasmania's compact layout and laid-back pace make for a region that is easy to navigate and ideal for a self-drive experience.

Many of the major rental car agencies have a presence at the airport. Launceston is the perfect starting point for a drive journey.

If you would prefer someone else to do the driving, taxis and Uber are available from the airport. It's a short 15 minute trip to the City of Launceston. The drivers here are friendly and warm, always willing to offer helpful suggestions and recommendations, nothing beats asking a local!

Jump on a bus

Metro operate our main public transport system, a bus network that services the city. A Day Rover pass will gain you unlimited travel after 9.00am. Please be aware many routes do not operate later in the evening or on a Sunday.

City of Launceston operates the free Tiger Bus service, transporting commuters and travellers alike from Inveresk Railyards into the City and back. The service loops every 30 minutes. Keep an eye out for the buses with the distinctive black stripes of the illusive Tasmanian Tiger.

A number of regional bus services operate out of Launceston. Check the websites of Redline Coaches, TassieLink, Callows Coaches and Manion's Coaches for their latest schedules.

Pedal Power

You are sure to find a challenging hill or two in Launceston as it nestles in the Tamar Valley. If you are up for the hill climb, grab a bike and enjoy the relaxed environment and fresh air that make cycling so enjoyable here.

Bikes are available for hire from Mountain Designs, Arthouse Backpacker Hostel, Rent A Cycle Tasmania, AvantiPlus Launceston and Mountain Bike Tasmania.

Take off to Flinders Island

To access the rugged and wild landscapes of pristine Flinders Island Sharp Airlines offer the only Launceston to Flinders Island and Melbourne to Flinders Island (Essendon) services.
