Cataract Gorge is OPEN despite footpath and road closures being in place during January and February 2024
A visit to Launceston isn't complete without a trip to Cataract Gorge, a slice of nature right on the city fringe. Visually breath-taking, it also has everything you need for a fun day out in nature including a range of walking and hiking trails, a scenic chairlift, gorgeous gardens, and scenic lookouts. And in summer, cool off in the pool!
Normally the Gorge is an easy walk from the heart of Launceston but during January and February 2024 essential maintenance is scheduled, and as a result Cataract Walk and Trevallyn Steps are closed. The Zig Zag Track remains open. This track is suited to experienced walkers, with a good level of fitness, and requires sturdy footwear suited to rugged terrain.
Cataract Gorge can also be accessed by vehicle or by public transport with the free Tiger Bus service. If you plan to drive your own vehicle to Cataract Gorge, please note that during January and February 2024, detours are in place, so be sure to check the maps below and allow a little extra time for travel to and from the Gorge.
